The 2017 artists have drawn inspiration from their 1967 counterparts and plan to honor the legendary performances during their own sets. The festival is proud to announce that many performers will pay special tribute to those who came before them by including a cover song in their set that is of particular significance to them.
Below is a list of confirmed artist tributes (plus more TBA):
- Jack Johnson – Steve Miller Band
- Leon Bridges – Otis Redding
- The Head and The Heart – The Mamas & The Papas
- Gary Clark Jr. – Jimi Hendrix
- Jim James – The Who
- Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats – Big Brother & The Holding Company
- Nicki Bluhm & Dirty Dozen Brass Band – Jefferson Airplane
In addition, three artists who performed at the original festival in 1967, Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead), Booker T. Jones (Booker T. & The MG’s), and Eric Burdon will be back at Monterey Pop performing with Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band, Booker T.’s Stax Revue, and Eric Burdon & The Animals.
Artists on this year’s Monterey Pop lineup all share a commonality – they are honored and inspired to represent the festival’s rich history at the 50-year celebration.
“I grew up with Jimi Hendrix and Otis Redding live at the Monterey Pop Festival playing in my house all the time. I love the spirit in those recordings. I can’t wait to be part of such a special musical experience.” – Jack Johnson
“I’m excited to have the opportunity to channel the spirits of some of the greats that laid the foundations of soul, folk and rock and roll music.” – Leon Bridges
“To stand in the very same spot as Jimi Hendrix, The Mamas & the Papas, the Grateful Dead, and Janis Joplin and absorb the energy from 50 years ago – how incredible.” – The Head and the Heart
